I would go down with the ship if I had to
May 23, 2007
It’s been decided that long weekends this summer will be spent at the parent’s cottage. This past weekend was our inaugural visit, lasting three days and change, and aside from the bad math that landed us in discouraging traffic at the start of our journey, we were able to make it up the lake before dark.
There is a shallow perilous creek that you have to boat through to get to the lake the cottage is on. Dad gave me some lessons in navigating it, since I recently gave Transport Canada $50 in exchange for a plastic card that says I can steer a boat. He goes by all these natural markers, like rocks and half submerged stumps. So he’d say things like “See that stump over there?” and there’d be like a hundred stumps over there, “line up with that one, then hang left after that log.”
The water was really calm which was good, except you could see all of the things you weren’t hitting with the boat, like logs and the last guy that tried to navigate the creek. I was much more successful than that guy.
