Movie Weekend

May 29, 2007

We watched the first two Bourne movies over the weekend, The Bourne Identity, and The Bourne Supremacy. Once I made the mental leap that allowed me to see Matt Damon as an action hero, the only thing I couldn’t understand is why I hadn’t seen these movies earlier. They were terrific. And free, since Liz picked them up at the library. And everyone knows that free movies pack the most entertainment value for the price.

Both Bourne movies had a car chase sequence. Car chases don’t appear much in movies anymore, I guess they’ve become overdone. There’s only so much you can do with a car chase, really: drive really fast, and avoid hitting things. You can accentuate the fact that you could hit things by driving against the flow of traffic, and don’t forget to shoot at each other and miss alot. Of course if you can’t avoid hitting something, hitting something can also be exciting. Like a tree, or a median. The Blues Brothers had a great car chase. Bullitt had a good one, too. I’m sure there are lots of them.

The Bourne Supremacy had a much better car chase than the first movie, maybe because in some respects it was less like a car chase, and more like a giant game of automotive pinball. And who doesn’t like pinball?

And also? Lost season ender was worth the wait.
