Arr, that's Captain Ryan to you

June 29, 2007

Liz celebrated her birthday yesterday in Belleville. It was a lovely low key day, involving loonie shakes from Reid’s Dairy (no relation, so stop asking) a mid afternoon nap, and Chinese food for dinner. This was a serious step above last years birthday, which found her in the hospital for mystery nerve pain. My feeling about mystery nerve pain is the same as for my back pain from a couple weeks ago. It’s far more frustrating without a good story to go with it.

Today we are off to the lake, which is only an hour away now that we are in Belleville. That’s very satisfying to me because I’m a terrible long distance driver. I might be different with another set of tools, but as it is a 2000 Honda Civic would not be my preferred vehicle for a cross country trip. Or, really, even a trip with a destination much farther than the grocery store a couple blocks away. It makes my back hurt, and the road noise is just bearable. Also, the 401 highway here in Canada is the most boring and unmotivated road to drive on in North America, I’m sure. Two hours on that thing and I’m ready to careen the car right off the road into a tree just to end the agony.

We are about to repack the cooler for the remainder of the trip to the lake. I’m the captain this time, a fact that has given Liz no end of concern. I assure her I know which end of the boat the motor is on, but she’s not so sure.

Just stay off my lake, and we’ll all be fine.
